Restoration Ceremony at George Green’s Tomb – 3 October 2024
The Shipwrights’ Company is extremely proud of its connection with George Green’s School on the Isle of Dogs. George Green and his eldest son, Richard, were both members of the Company, indeed they were Shipwrights, Shipowners and Philanthropists and the Green family continue to work in the maritime sector and are still members of the Company today!
Led by Liveryman Jonathan Green a project team has recently restored the tomb that George Green shares with his second wife, Elizabeth, and his son, Richard and today the family met at the tomb to hold a restoration ceremony.
Jonathan writes:
“The Gods smiled & it was dry! The tomb looks brilliant. We had a very good restoration ceremony with excellent contributions from the Mayflower Primary School and George Green’s School pupils. Heritage of London Trust had a photographer there so there will be better quality pictures than these. Three Shipwrights were present – Catherine Mulvihill, Jamie Cayzer-Colvin & myself.
Regrettably, Jonathan’s son Jamie, who is also a Shipwright, was abroad on business.
The plaque by the tomb includes the following:
The restoration of this tomb was managed by Heritage of London Trust and carried out by Rupert Harris Conservation, with support from Jamie Cayzer-Colvin, Jonathan Green, their families, the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights, George Green’s Almshouses and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
